How to Use Phonics Concepts for Effective Reading Instruction

“Learning the Phonics Concepts is essential to effective reading instruction.”

Jordan Cromwell – Developer of the Awakening Potential For Reading Success Program

Why is learning the phonics concepts so important to teach children to read?

In order to read, a child must be able to recognize the sounds in a word.  In the English language, this is not easy, because there are many different ways to spell the sounds.  So how can a child know which letter combinations make a particular sound?  By learning the phonics concepts!  Each phonics concept teaches the child what particular letter combinations make a certain sound.  To make this learning process more memorable, effective, and fun, each phonics concept also has a particular character, or mascot.

Teaching the Phonics Concepts can be both Fun and Effective!

For example, the ‘ar’ is one of the “Captain” sounds.  It sounds like ar, just like a pirate would say, “arrrrrrr.”

The Captains phonics concept

The child learns that when the letter a and letter r are put together, they make a new sound /ar/.  The character of the ‘Captains’ helps the child to remember this concept more easily, because it is visual and fun.

The Awakening Potential For Reading Success program also includes fun hand motions that the teacher/parent can act out and the student can learn.  These hand motions make it even easier to remember the concept, because the kinesthetic aspect of learning is now being engaged.

Here’s an example of another phonics concept:  The /fl/ as in the word flat.  The student needs to learn that the f and the l sound need to be blended together into the single sound /fl/, which is what the “Blenders” concept teaches.

The Blenders phonics concept

Just like you blend together ingredients in a blender to make a smoothie or milkshake, you can ‘blend’ the f and the l sounds together to make the /fl/ sound in flat!

Every Phonics Concept a child needs to become a Successful Reader!

All of the other phonics concepts are covered in the Awakening Potential For Reading Success program, and just like the Captain /ar/ sound and the Blender /fl/ sound, they each have their own unique character and hand motion.

When a child learns all of these concepts, he or she will be able to easily recognize these sounds in words and read the words more easily.  Amazing!
