Decodable Books
The decodable books (ebooks) in the Awakening Potential For Reading Success Book Series are aligned with a phonics concept or decoding strategy from the Awakening Potential For Reading Success reading program.
Focus on a Single Decoding Strategy
The story will contain words which use this concept, allowing the student to practice what they have learned from the corresponding lesson in the reading program.
The books can also be used as stand alone decodable books, or they can be used for reading practice in conjunction with other phonics programs.
The Basket uses the Syllable Strength concept. Syllable Strength is a decoding strategy that uses your strength to ‘break’ the word into syllables. A syllable has at least one vowel and is often grouped with consonants. Each vowel can break off with the consonants next to it to make a syllable. For example, basket breaks into bas–ket.
Decodable Books at Just Right Levels
Each story is divided into 3 or 4 levels (stories with more basic concepts, like The Basket, only have levels 1-3):
There is 1 book for each level (Levels 1, 2, and 3), which means you get a total of 3 books!
- Level 1– Appropriate for students in grades 1-2. Very short sentences, mostly containing sight words. Only 1 or 2 words per sentence need to be decoded. Each page only has 1 sentence. Text is quite large. Large pictures accompany the text on each page.
- Level 2– Appropriate for students in grades 2-3. Longer sentences with 2-3 words that need to be decoded. Each page only has 1 sentence. Text is smaller than level 1. Large pictures accompany the text on each page.
- Level 3– Appropriate for students in grades 3-4. Longer sentences with more frequency of words that need to be decoded. Each sentence has 2-3 phrases. Each page has multiple sentences. Smaller pictures accompany the text on each page.
- Level 4– Appropriate for students in grades 4-6. Longest sentences of all the levels. Sentences have 2-3 phrases. Each page only has a large number of sentences. Pictures are only included every few pages.
The Basket Decodable Books
The Basket is a fun story about a group of friends who use a large basket to take everything they need on their picnic together. They discover that many things can fit in the basket (and not just the food!). They finish everything at their picnic, and then enjoy the sunset together.
